I’m scrolling through my Facebook feed. Post after post. No one comments. No one cares. It feels like I’m screaming into a black hole that gives nothing back. I slump forward, head between my knees, almost on the verge of tears.
“What is it gonna take to break through this wall?” I whisper.
Otis, stretched across the arm of the couch like a bored regent, flicks his tail with lazy authority.

“You’re already through the wall,” he says. “You just don’t like the room you landed in.”
I look at him. “Nobody’s listening. Nobody’s watching.”
He yawns, a cavernous chasm of teeth. “News flash, human, silence is the feedback. They saw you. They scrolled on. You think you’re ignored? No. You’re judged and found boring. Congratulations. You’ve joined the club of everyone who ever picked up a pen, a brush, or a drumstick.”
I bury my face in my hands. “That’s not helping.”
“That’s the point,” his head tilts, “Stop looking for help. Breakthrough doesn’t come from begging the wall to move. You hit it again. And again. You climb over, go around, or dig under it. Until the wall’s gone, or behind you. Until then, silence is still the loudest applause you can expect to get.”
Otis hops down, licks his paw, and flicks his ears like the conversation is over. Then he looks back with eyes that slice right through me:
“Now quit whining. Feed me.”
