I catch Otis staring at a blank wall, eyes wide, tail twitching.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

He doesn’t blink. “Paranoiac-critical activity,” he purrs. “I’m bending the world of delirium onto the plane of reality.”

“What?” I shake my head.

“Oh yes, a real genius at work here. Think, Salvador Dalí, duh.”

Then he swats at nothing. Except, I see it too: shapes flickering, shadows twisting, an orchestra of moths conducting silence, in an instant.

“Otis,” I mutter, “that’s a wall.”

He stretches. “Reality’s just the wall you agree to see. Me? I see the cracks, the portals, the places your mind won’t wander.”

His whiskers flare, back arches, and he’s gone, launching off the couch, skidding across the floor, a streak of fur ricocheting around the room like delirium itself had taken the wheel.

I’m left staring at the same wall, suddenly not so blank.
