You humans love movements; that’s how you organize art.

Cats love moments.

The Impressionists figured out the difference.

The traditionalists thought they were painting unfinished pictures.

The Impressionists knew they were painting unfinished light.

Those are two different things.

The Academy wanted every blade of grass accounted for.

The Impressionists said,

“The light won’t wait.”

So they painted what was disappearing instead of what was permanent.

The tree gave the painting a place. The light gave it a moment. Cats knew this all along. 

You complain that Monet’s paintings are blurry.

Go outside.

Look at a tree.

Now tell me where every leaf is.

The critics called Monet sloppy.

Cats have never cared what critics think.

Cats don’t inspect a sunbeam.

We occupy it.

By the time you’ve decided whether the light is worth painting…

…it’s already somewhere else.

The mouse never waits for you to finish the sketch.
