The sun was out, the birds were busy, and the deck boards were warm enough to nap on. Which Otis was contemplating, as he turned around over and over again, getting ready to settle in.

A maple samara spiraled out of the tree and landed at his paws. Otis studied it for a long moment, as though it had arrived carrying a message.

I was taking in the warmth while fidgeting with my phone.  After prolonged scrolling, I glanced down at Otis, still staring at the maple seed.

“What?” I looked up from my phone, thumb suspended halfway through another swipe.

“You are always waiting for important ideas to arrive, looking important.”

His eyes followed the branches overhead as they swayed in the breeze.

“What does that mean?”

I glanced up from my phone.

“Songs don’t arrive as albums. Books don’t arrive as manuscripts.”

A breeze stirred the leaves above us.

“You’re trying to make a point here.”

Still contemplating the samara. “A sentence. A memory. A question. A rhythm. Most ideas arrive incomplete. If every acorn of an idea looked like an oak tree, imagination wouldn’t be necessary.”
