I’m reading Emerson on my couch, wading through heavy 19th-century vocabulary. Otis slowly kneads his way to my shoulder and examines the text.
“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds,” he says, “Just like you.”
“What? Me? May I remind you who keeps wet food flowing,” disdaining the criticism of my cat.
“Nope, just like you.” He begins to wrap himself around my neck, slowly squishing onto my shoulders, getting ready for an opportunistic nap. “You limit yourself with your mindset.” Otis’s whiskers brush my ear as he settles in, purring like a motor hidden under fur.
“You quote Emerson at me,” I mutter, trying to keep my place in the dense paragraph. “But what do you even know about foolish consistency?”
His tail flicks against the page, blotting out half the sentence.
“I know you’ve read the same line three times without tasting it once,” he says, voice smooth as velvet. “You’re chasing words instead of chewing them. Emerson’s clear idea is that a great person does not have to think consistently from one day to the next. But you? You’re stuck proving yesterday’s self was right instead of daring to be different today.”
I sigh. “That’s how reading works,” trying to change the subject.
“No,” Otis yawns, stretching his claws into my shoulder for emphasis. “That’s how stalling works. You think being busy is being alive. Consistency is your cage, and you decorate it with excuses, all the while defending your limitations.”
I glance down at him, slouched across me like a furred scarf. “And what’s your big alternative?”
His eyes narrow, yellow marbles in the lamplight.
“Nap hard. Wake hungry. Hunt with chaos. That’s the only consistency worth keeping.”
He closes his eyes, purr deepening, already drifting into his Emersonian nap while I’m left clutching the book.

Can We Help You?
Are you living from habit or from growth?

Don’t defend your limits. Challenge them. Let today’s version of you outgrow yesterday’s. Close the book, break the pattern, and try something that unsettles your comfort. Consistency won’t make you great. Courage will.
