I’m sitting at the kitchen table, laptop open, preaching the gospel of “authentic living” into a microphone. “You have to be real,” I say, eyes locked on the webcam. “You can’t fake purpose and pretend passion.”
Otis is on the counter behind me, watching. Tail flicking. Silent judgment in fur form.
When I finish recording, I exhale with satisfaction. “Nailed it,” I mutter, “No more edits.”
From the counter, Otis yawns. “You should win an award for that one.”
I look up. “For what?”
“For your performance”
“Performance? That was authenticity.”
He hops down, landing with the grace of someone who’s never doubted himself a day in his life. “Authenticity?” he echoes, padding slowly toward me. “While you’re wearing that shirt you hate, drinking coffee you don’t like, talking about truth through a fiber microphone filter so your voice sounds smoother?”
“It’s branding,” I protest. “Presentation matters.”
He sits, curling his tail around his paws like a tiny magistrate. “So truth requires lighting, sound processing, and a second take?”
I scowl. “You don’t understand the genre.”
“Oh, I understand hypocrisy,” he says, licking a paw. “You say you want raw truth, but you’re terrified of being unpolished. You claim you hate artifice but can’t stop editing yourself.” He pauses, studying me. “You’re like a bird yelling about freedom from inside a cage made of algorithms.”
“That’s not fair.”
“No, it’s accurate.” He looks at my laptop, then back at me. “You confuse performance for conviction. You talk about being real, but every word you speak has an audience in mind.”
“That’s not a contradiction, it’s—”
“Performative contradiction,” he interrupts. “When you argue against the very thing you’re doing.”
“Do the thing, don’t fake the thing. Let the truth meow for itself.”
Then he walks off toward the window, sunlight catching his whiskers.
“You humans,” he sneers over his shoulder, “always chasing sincerity with a selfie stick.”
