I have generally found human civilization to be an unfortunate experiment in which the participants vastly overestimate their importance.
Nevertheless, history occasionally produces individuals whose judgment deserves recognition.
Consider Abu Hurayrah, a seventh-century companion of the Prophet Muhammad, whose name means “Father of the Little Kitten.”
He became one of Islam’s most prolific transmitters of religious teachings, yet history had the good sense to remember him as the man privileged to serve a cat.
For once, posterity demonstrated impeccable judgment. Fourteen centuries later, the man’s association with a kitten remains his crowning achievement.
An Irish monk was so impressed by his white cat, Pangur Bán, that he wrote a poem about him. Apparently, the monk spent his nights searching for divine wisdom while Pangur Bán hunted mice. Whether the monk achieved divine enlightenment is of little consequence. The cat, at least, had something to show for his efforts.
I find these rare outbreaks of human intelligence encouraging. For centuries, mankind has argued over how to save its immortal soul, yet remains baffled by the mysteries of the litter box.
