The music business looks very different from the stage.
Before the lights come up, somebody has to find the room, book the artists, promote the show, sell the tickets, manage the personalities, pay the bills, and somehow convince an audience to walk through the door.
Ed Maloney knows that side of the business.
His career has taken him through restaurants, nightclubs, concert promotion, and live music production. In Seattle, he became closely associated with the Highway 99 Blues Club, a venue that spent nearly fifteen years bringing regional and national blues artists to the city.
But Highway 99 is only part of the story.

Ed has continued producing and promoting live music through Blue Velvet Entertainment, working with musicians and venues while staying involved in Seattle’s changing music community.
For this edition of Mack-n-Cheeze Music Presents, Ed and I talk about what happens on the other side of the microphone. The conversation covers clubs, promotion, musicians, audiences, and the realities of making live entertainment work. We did this interview in November of 2020, the height of Covid 19.
Plenty of attention goes to the people standing under the lights.
Backstage Business is about one of the people who helped turn those lights on.
