Mack-n-Cheeze Music Presents: Navigating New Harmonies

Universal Music Group – Navigating New Harmonies | Mack-n-Cheeze Music

I came across a story about Universal Music Group acquiring a 25.8% stake in Chord Music Partners, and it left me with more questions than answers.

What did they see that made music rights worth that kind of investment?

Were they simply buying a successful catalog, or are they betting that songs will become even more valuable over time?

If companies with enormous resources are investing in music ownership, what should independent musicians learn from that? Have we been so focused on recording the next song that we’ve overlooked the value of the songs we already own?

I don’t know where the industry is headed, and I’m cautious about drawing big conclusions from a single business deal. What does this suggest? Large companies rarely commit that much money without expecting a return.

I  know I need to get tight on publishing, licensing, and the long-term catalogs. Evidently, the mega-companies understand this better than me. Not because every song will become a hit, but because every song has the potential to become part of something larger than its first release.

I’m still thinking this through. Is this story really about the acquisition? Maybe the real question is what the work we’re creating today is worth tomorrow.

Can We Help You?

What should independent musicians learn from this?
