With You

Warning:
As an artist, sharing the ideas and concepts that brought this song into the universe defeats the purpose of the experience the song or art piece means to the human experiencing it individually. The work of art should be experienced in the manner that it that it is first perceived. It should not be experienced exactly how the artist intends it to be understood. Please experience the song in how it makes you feel or how it conjures visuals for review that you personally can recall. By reading this explanation of how this song came into existence may alter your own personal perception or meaning it holds to you. This is literally interference into your personal perception.
“With You” was intended to be a multilayered meaning tied to a bassline. I personally interpreted it from a group in the 90s that turned to smoke called, Bad Mother Goose. Playing with some of the best bassists in Seattle, I grew increasingly appreciative of how the bass is the link between the melody the bassline, and percussion. The groove is a bassline I practiced emulating a Mother Goose song.
When the ideas come to me, they come in many forms, but most commonly in the form of lyrics, or a groove that requires lyrics. Then I hammer out a melody line knowing that the lyrics will be a driving rhythmic force of the melody. It will be a melody that will have to be temporarily malleable. On occasion, I’ll hear the quick mix of the song even before the lyrics on loop like a brain worm. “With you” was born in prose.
The Experience
I wanted to write a song about the experience of being with god, embracing it’s son and Savior’s current presence in the moment fully. It is about when a relationship is just so good that you always want to be close to your most significant partner. The trick was how do I do this simultaneously with meaning?
I referenced a Christian based book that had simple bible quotes for each day of the year. For some reason, each and every day seemed appropriate. It often quoted the New Testament where Jesus would often say, rest in me, rest with me, or trust in me. That often coincided with my belief that it is only this moment that truly exists.
If one cant rest in this moment, are they actually experiencing the moment, or are they riding in false consciousness? My preference is a little of both, but there is only this moment. Everything else is only a distraction.
The song With You was meaning as a spirit is timeless, if you believe in that sort of thing. Also, being present in the moment pushing on the interference is very important for perception. The feeling is very replenishing. I won’t go over the lyrics line by line or what each phrase meant, but know that there were three intended meanings behind each.
Thank you for Reading, and thank you for understanding my concern for reading this.
