Why Dance The Tidy-Up Tango?
The artist’s journey: Our quest is all about the passion of creation, right? There is another side to that coin. We embrace the hustle of keeping our studios from spiraling into complete disarray.
I’m talking about the less-than-glamorous tasks. We can’t forget about tidy-up time. It’s imperative to organizing our thoughts and work places. Drowning in a sea of clutter is useless to our creativity.
After all, if your studio looks like an art supply store exploded, you’re not exactly paving the way for your next stroke of genius. We got to face it; we have to deal with the aftermath of our creative outbursts.
We tell ourselves it’s part of the process. There is a fine line between a creative haven and a disaster zone. That’s where the ‘Tidy-Up Tango’ comes in, a little rhythm to keep the chaos in check without killing the magic.
Consider it a necessary evil, like tuning your instrument or stretching before a run. Sure, it’s more fun to dive headfirst into the madness, but the mess can take over. And when it does, it’s not only our studios that suffer; minds get tangled in the clutter, too. The trick is learning how to clear the stage without losing the groove.
So, let’s talk about tidying up-not in a preachy Marie Kondo way, but with the understanding that a bit of order can go a long way. While chaos might be our muse, it’s clarity that brings our best work to life. And that, my fellow artists, is the dance we must master.
The Dog Patrol

When I was a kid, one of my early lessons in responsibility came in the form of our beloved cocker spaniel, Penny. She was sweet, loyal, and everything you’d want in a dog, but she had a knack for turning our yard into a minefield. Saturday mornings, after cartoons, I’d head outside with a wheelbarrow and shovel. My job was what my parents dubbed the “dog patrol.”
At seven years old, my room wasn’t the only space that needed tidying-Penny’s handiwork was all over the yard.
And it wasn’t merely Penny. There were seasonal adjustments. I’d also be grappling with fallen cherries, apples, walnuts, a mix of grass clippings, and leaves. It wasn’t glamorous, but it taught me early on that maintaining a space, no matter how chaotic, is part of the deal.
My Desk: Where Coffee Cups Go To Die

You know you’re in the zone when your desk becomes a final resting place for coffee mugs. Each cup is a silent testament to a project completed. These chalices embody more than a conquered deadline. They’re relics of your creative journey.
But the workspace starts to look like a game of ceramic Jenga. When the mugs stack up, it’s time to tend the graveyard. Take a step back and confront reality. Even the most devoted artist needs to clear the heap.
Gather those mugs in a solemn procession to the sink. Forget about eulogies. Soap, water, and the silent vow to only use one cup at a time. Your creative juice will fill your next burst of flow; count on it.
The Unfinished Symphony Of To-Do Lists
“I feel that art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos.” Saul Bellow
We all have that one notebook, or, be honest, five, crammed full of to-do lists. All those brilliant ideas and half-baked sketches need to go somewhere. It’s a glorious mess, the kind of chaos that makes you feel like a creative genius. But when you dig through pages of poetic musings and find last month’s grocery list? Take that as a sign.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of disorder-it’s proof that your brain is buzzing with ideas. But whenever you flip a page, you find a mix of existential musings and doodles; it might be time to rein it in a bit. You know you’re a genius, but even you must have a little organization. The wheels need to smoothly turn.
Take a deep breath and immerse yourself into the mess with a purpose. Sort through those notebooks. Do it like you’re panning for gold. Grab the nuggets and the great ideas, and hoard them. Cross off the tasks and ideas that have gone stale. Be bold and admit that not every brilliant thought needs to see the light of day. Sometimes, decluttering is the best way to uncover that hidden gem of an idea buried under last year’s goals.
That’s what they say, whoever “they” are.
Tango To A Different Step
Gad that sounds like a lot of work. I haven’t got time for that. To-do lists and goal setting? Usually spells failure for me. I crumble under my own expectations. They say to embrace failure. I don’t have to create it.
If this is you as well, try writing a “Got-Done” list. It’s simple, easy, and a game-changer. Did you network this morning? Got done. Did you put in that two hours of research? Got done. Did you practice? Got done. Did you work out? Okay, you get it. It’s that simple, and it’s that effective.
What I have found? Instead of worrying about what I haven’t accomplished, I know what I have executed. It’s a source of pride, a boost for the endorphins, and a balm for the soul. The amazing thing? My Got-Done list tells me exactly what I need to do tomorrow. The big picture comes into focus with the completion of small details. It’s part of working backwards. Nuff said.
The Studio Floor: Art Or Obstacle Course?
A rite of passage? If you need help remembering the original color of your studio floor.
Congratulations. It’s official. You have reached peak artist mode. Your floor is no longer a surface. Consider it a canvas. It can be paint splatters from that inspired night or guitar picks and beer bottles from an exhilarating rehearsal. Each mark, each stain, tells a story. These are little pieces of creativity’s passage captured in time.
You can view this mess as an evolving art exhibit. There is a point where the line between artistic expression and chaos gets blurry. Is walking through your studio starting to feel like a game of hopscotch? It’s time to admit that your floor might be more of a hazard than a masterpiece.
It’s time to show your studio floor some overdue love. Grab a broom, a mop if you’re feeling ambitious, and reclaim that space for your next big idea. As you sweep, remember, this isn’t just about clearing the clutter; it’s about creating a space you can be proud of. And in doing so, you’re not just cleaning your studio, you’re clearing your mind, making room for fresh inspiration and a sense of accomplishment.
In my case, it’s the follow-up of recording sessions. At the end of a session, there are mucho microphones, XLRs, D.I.s, and music stands tossed about the studio. My music chums are good at this. Everyone sticks around and helps stow away gear. It helps to work with pros.
Keys To The Kingdom

Habits are the keys to success.
And who knows? As you sweep away the remnants of your last creative surge, you might find that the simple act of cleaning sparks your next big idea. A clean studio isn’t just a blank canvas; it’s a fresh start. It’s a space where new ideas can take root and creativity can flow. So, embrace the process and get ready to be inspired.
Digital Clutter: Dancing With The Silent Menace
“The artist confronts chaos. The whole thing of art is, how do you organize chaos?” Romare Bearden
What does your computer desktop look like? Is it a snapshot of your mind? A chaotic, sprawling collection of files, projects and images? Stuff that represents a burst of inspiration, a fleeting thought, or a task you promised you’d get to later?
That’s a little close to home.
When later comes and you’re spending too much time looking for that one file, it’s time to tidy up.
The thing is, digital clutter is sneaky. It doesn’t pile up in the way a physical mess does. You don’t have a desk drawer that barely closes. There is no stack of papers, teetering, waiting to fall off your desk. The digital mess is almost intangible. It amasses in the background. Each random screenshot, untitled document, and misfiled image adds to the confusion. Before you know it, your once-efficient workflow has turned into a treasure hunt through a jungle of files.
Give your digital space the same care you’d give your studio or workspace. Set aside a some time and address it. Wrangle those stray files into organized folders. Be ruthless: delete what you don’t need, archive what’s important. Don’t tempt yourself; resist the urge to save every funny meme that lands in your inbox. By keeping your digital environment clean, you’ll free up mental space. Then you can focus on what matters.
Blessing And Curse
Each blessing comes with a curse, or so it seems. Every silver lining has a dark cloud. My biggest digital challenge is the success of my content. Google indexing is my current bane. I have committed to fixing the indexing of my content daily. I can’t keep up. What used to be a small annoyance is now an exponential disruption. Seeking help will be the eventual solution. In the mean time, I do what I can do.
The Creative Supply Explosion, Or Am I A Gear Slut
You started with a few pens and a sketchbook-the basics to get your ideas flowing. Over time, your modest collection of supplies has multiplied and spread like wildfire. Empty shelves are now filled with your tools and artistic paraphernalia.
I get it. You need the tools, and you got to have options.
I have a recording studio in my house. My malady is being a “gear slut.” It’s the allure of more. More is better, right? Excessive tools enhance capability; it makes sense.
At some point in your journey, your creative space might start to look like an episode of Hoarders. At that juncture, you have to figure it out.
I had to get super focused. All my XLRs are in a set of drawers, microphones are on shelves, and Lite Pipe and S/PDIF cables are on their own rack.
This made recording more manageable, and I could find what I needed when inspiration struck. The sweet satisfaction of being an artist with their act together felt good.
The payoff has been being more inspired and creative. The mess doesn’t interfere with the flow anymore. Out of sight, out of mind.
The Mental Mess: Waltzing With Your Headspace

“The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees oneself. And the arbitrariness of the constraint serves only to obtain precision in the execution.” Igor Stravinsky
You might cling to your own mental mess because it helps you avoid facing reality.
In the depths of your mind, a battle rages; a tango between the forces of good and evil. On one side stands Clarity. Clarity is a figure of light and reason. It moves with precision. Illuminating the path forward cuts through the fog confusion.
Opposing Clarity is Chaos, a shadowy figure that thrives in the clutter of your mind. Chaos is not just an adversary; it’s a seductive force. It whispers promises of comfort in distraction, luring you into the safety of your mental mess.
With every misstep, Chaos keeps you from facing the harsh truths of reality. The cocoon of avoidance and self-deception becomes a safe zone. It’s easy to lose yourself in the tangle of thoughts, the endless loops of worry and doubt that Chaos spins around you.
As Clarity and Chaos waltz through your headspace, choosing between them can be challenging. Chaos is familiar, almost comforting in its unpredictability. It gives you an excuse to stay put and not confront uncomfortable realities.
Choosing Clarity is not a simple decision. It demands courage; it’s your mental fortress. It asks you to face your fears and tidy up the mental mess. You need to take the next step toward a more meaningful existence.
But here’s the truth: the longer you cling to Chaos, the more it entangles you. The dance becomes more frantic and overwhelming.
Clarity might be harder to embrace, but each step you take toward it lightens the load. Don’t you desire to be closer to the peace and fulfillment of purpose and intention?
The War Between Clarity and Chaos
In this ongoing battle, the question is not whether you will face reality but when. Will you let Chaos continue to lead, keeping you stuck? Or will you take Clarity’s hand, confront the truth, and find the freedom from facing your reality head-on? The choice, as always, is yours.
During the pandemic, I found myself standing alongside Clarity. From this alliance, the vitality of my purpose began to bloom. In the stillness of isolation, I discovered a sense of direction. I embraced a deep-rooted mission that fueled my every action. Clarity guided me, illuminating the path. The things that mattered most stripped away the noise.
But when the world reopened, Chaos returned, accompanied by confusion, frustration, and anguish. The realities of the outside world collided with the sanctuary I had built during quarantine. The beautiful, balanced apple cart toppled. The powerful habits and rituals that had sustained me through months of solitude were now at odds with the demands of a reawakened society. The rhythms I had mastered became discordant. Clarity’s voice grew faint under the weight of renewed responsibilities.
For months, I wrestled with Chaos, struggling to reestablish my equilibrium. It was a battle to redefine the structure I had once found so comforting. I realized I had to sacrifice the quantitative. I was on the the relentless pursuit of more. The qualitative slowly emerged as my new guiding essence.
Now, I stand, having reclaimed the fragile balance. Chaos may strike again. But with each encounter, I grow stronger in my resolve, more determined to hold fast to Clarity’s light. This is my story of a dance where clarity battles chaos, and purpose fights distraction. My focus will stand firm, and I will be ready for the next test.
The Creative Paradox: How Structure Liberates The Artist
“My music is best understood by children and animals.” Frank Zappa
Look, we’re artists. As creative individuals we thrive on a certain level of chaos. It’s part of our DNA, the spark that ignites our creativity and fuels our passion. There is a fine line between harnessing chaos for its brilliance and letting it take over. The hodgepodge-muddle of our ideas at some point becomes overwhelming. It makes daily life more challenging than it needs to be.
Achieving the minimalist’s dream may not be your cup of tea, but a little tidy-up time can go a long way. It’s analogous to clearing the stage before the next act.
I find it helpful to remove obstacles. Then, I can move with freedom, unburdened by my previous mess. My fellow music pals are pretty astounded by the transition I have made. Becoming super organized has influenced my qualitative and creative bounty.
Once you tidy up your physical and mental sanctuaries, you’ll find more inspiration. The goal is to stop tripping over your own mess. It’s about finding the balance between chaos and order, knowing when to embrace the mess and when to clear it away.
Do you want a free flow of ideas? If you try to get hot and cold water from the same faucet, you will only get lukewarm water. It’s the substance, the meaningful work, that matters
And here’s the thing: the art of cleaning up is like another form of the “Dog Patrol.” Clean your crap up and take control of you. Create something extraordinary.
