The Power Of The KISS

The Power of the KISS blog post with a trumpet player under a spotlight.

KISS it, Baby. It’s more than just an acronym; it’s a philosophy. The focal point of true effectiveness. Simple, powerful, and to the point – this approach can transform how you tackle challenges, both in life and creativity.

KISS

I first learned about the K.I.S.S. concept in my college jazz lab band. Our professor, Bart, a horn player with a knack for cutting through the noise, introduced this idea to us soloists. Bart was awesome – a mentor who could simplify the most complex ideas into something we could all grasp. The K.I.S.S. principle, as he taught us, stood for “Keep It Stupid Simple.” But Bart, in his wisdom, always added a comma, turning it into “Keep It Simple, Stupid.” That pause made all the difference for me.

Evidently, there are two ways to interpret K.I.S.S. The U.S. Navy, who coined the acronym, seems to favor the former: “Keep It Stupid Simple.” It’s about making things so straightforward that you minimize errors by avoiding unnecessary complexity. I’ve always embraced the latter interpretation – “Hey, keep it simple because you’re not that smart.” My sarcastic self finds Professor Bart’s interpretation the most fun.

Defining Simplicity: The K.I.S.S. Principle In Action

Simplicity, especially through the lens of K.I.S.S., is about getting to the heart of what truly matters. It’s about stripping away the unnecessary to focus on the essentials.

KISS And Minimalism

Have you noticed how simplifying your creative work makes your message more impactful?

Minimalism is more than clean lines and open spaces. Want a profound change in your creativity? Embrace the philosophy. Focus on what matters. Drop the non-essential. Minimalism allows the core message or idea to emerge with clarity and impact.

I work with AI extensively, and a couple of my collaborators do as well. The consensus is that AI will run all over the place unless you are very specific with it. I refuse to let it do my writing. I actually tried that and hated the results.

Chat GPT loves to run its algorithmic mouth. You can hear it in AI-generated videos and see it in AI-generated scripts. It seems to prefer repetition and redundancy. I call it clutter. What price do creatives pay by allowing their content to uselessly over-extrapolate?

In creative fields, minimalism means stripping away excess and highlighting the most critical elements – a theme, emotion, or message. By letting these essentials take center stage, the work is more powerful and resonant.

Are you a writer? Consider selecting precise words and crafting concise sentences that avoid unnecessary detail. Learn show-don’t-tell; something I’m striving towards.

Are you a musician? I’m not John Williams. I focus on simple melody or rhythm, which allows me to convey more direct and effective emotion.

Reduce Overwhelm And Encourage Flow

Have you considered traps that can derail your creative endeavors? One of those is the illusion that we must know “exactly” where we are going at every step. Are you convinced that others who have succeeded knew “exactly” where they were going? Do you believe you should, too? This insistence on exactness can lead to overplanning, overthinking, and stagnation.

But the truth is, the creative process is rarely, if ever, about knowing “exactly” where you’re headed. It’s more about staying open, adaptable, and willing to let the journey unfold. The K.I.S.S. principle teaches us to let go of this need for precision and control. Don’t fixate on the illusion of exactness; this ain’t rocket science.

Allow me to repeat myself. Simplify your approach. Focus on essentials. Allow space for discovery and spontaneity.

In creativity, it’s often the unexpected twists and turns that lead to profound outcomes.

What happens when you free yourself from the need to have everything figured out? We’re not building a deck here. K.I.S.S. allows creativity to flow without the constraints of unnecessary complexity.

Alternatives

Its stifling: too many ideas, too many options, too much complexity. Minimalism helps reduce this by providing a framework for simplifying your process. Fewer elements reduce the cognitive load. Flow comes with less effort.

In practice, environment is critical. Experiment with where you flourish. Change up your creative domains.

Right now, I’m in a packed coffee joint, in flow for the last three hours. Sometimes I want solitude, sometimes not.

Have you thought about limiting the tools and materials you use? In my world, the adage, ‘It’s not the gear, it’s in the ear,’ speaks truth. Remarkable outcomes have resulted with the use of limited technology. Listen to what George Martin did with the Beatles.

Have you tried setting clear boundaries for your projects? Simple routines can keep you focused instead of getting lost in the details.

Georges Simenon

Georges Simenon was a man of discipline. Born in Belgium, he became one of the twentieth century’s most prolific writers. He created Inspector Maigret, a French detective who appeared in over 75 novels and 28 short stories. But Simenon didn’t just write crime fiction; his work touched on psychological novels and other literary genres.

Simenon’s method was truly one-of-a-kind. He wrote only 60 days a year, a stark contrast to the daily grind of most writers. In that time, he would complete a novel in 8 to 11 days. His approach was not about quantity, but about quality. He was meticulous, spending time thinking about his characters and plots before he even sat down to write. When he did, it was an all-consuming burst of creativity. This focus and efficiency allowed him to release over 200 books, including the Maigret series.

His writing was simple but deep. He avoided fancy language, choosing instead to tell his stories directly. This simplicity didn’t lessen the impact; it enhanced it. His characters were complex, his psychological insights sharp, but his words were few. He knew where he was going with his stories and got there without unnecessary detours.

Simenon’s story is a testament to the power of simplicity in action. He didn’t complicate his process. He planned, he wrote, and he finished. His intentional and focused approach, coupled with his simplicity, allowed him to achieve extraordinary results. It’s a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when we strip away the unnecessary and focus on what truly matters.

Embracing K.I.S.S. As A Source Of Creativity

Charlie “Bird” Parker emphasized the importance of brevity and clarity in music. One of his famous quotes is, “I can play all I know in eight bars.” That assertion reflected his belief in the power of succinct expression in jazz. Again, this is in alignment with the K.I.S.S. principle. It is a philosophy of simplicity and focusing on the essentials.

Parker’s approach was about cutting through unnecessary complexity. Get to the heart of the music. That’s what Professor Bart was teaching us – how to solo without the gobble gook. Strip away the superfluous to achieve clarity and impact.

Have you considered how many works of creativity came about by embracing K.I.S.S.? I mean, excluding Emerson. Constraints can compel the artist to focus on the core of their expression. What does that lead to? More impactful and original work. Embracing K.I.S.S. is not about doing less but more with less.

Recognizing The Difference Between The Really, Really Hard And The Impossible

The K.I.S.S. (Keep It Stupid Simple) principle distinguishes between challenging and impossible tasks. This understanding is vital for simplifying our approach to adversities. We want to focus our efforts on achievable goals. It’s easy to get lost in the pursuit of the unattainable.

Have you ever felt like you were climbing an endless mountain? In life and creativity, we will encounter situations that feel beyond reach.

Remember, just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s impossible. The K.I.S.S. principle is a guiding light in such situations, encouraging us to break down daunting tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. By doing so, we can always find a way to make our tasks more achievable. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, and what once seemed insurmountable can become within our reach.

When I mix a complex track, the sheer number of elements might make achieving the perfect balance feel impossible. But by focusing on the basics – like isolating the kick drum and lead vocals – the process becomes simpler. Instead of trying to perfect everything at once, I create a strong foundation. The goal is make the Vocals and Kick drum as musical as possible. When they resonate together, that allows everything else to fall into place.

It’s crucial to recognize when something is unfeasible. No amount of effort will change certain outcomes. Pushing against the impossible only leads to frustration and burnout. The K.I.S.S. principle advises acknowledging these limits. By accepting what is and redirecting our focus to where our efforts can make a difference, we can avoid unnecessary stress and wasted effort.

Why K.I.S.S. Works

Simplicity fosters peace of mind. In a world overwhelmed by noise and complexity, the K.I.S.S. principle offers a sanctuary. We don’t need to do everything; focus only on what matters. Simplifying your approach reduces stress.

I want to be entirely in the present. I’ve cut two things from my life: resentments about the past and worries about the future.

This decision clears away the mental clutter that often burdens us. Resentments and worries distract us from experiencing the present. By letting go of this extra weight, we free our mental and emotional energy. It is liberating to shed unnecessary complexities and embrace a more fulfilling life

Embrace Simplicity, Unlock Creativity

Eliminate the noise. Focus on what matters. Let go of unnecessary details. This enhances creativity, boosts efficiency, and brings peace to work and life. In music, art, or daily routines, clarity sharpens vision, strengthens decisions, and makes the process enjoyable without overthinking.

So, KISS it, Baby – make this approach your guiding principle, and watch it transform everything you do.

Today, tidy your workspace, refine a creative project, or streamline your to-do list. See how simplifying your day changes everything.

Simplicity brings beauty and power. Embrace the K.I.S.S. principle, and watch your world become clearer, calmer, and more meaningful. Keep it straightforward, and let that clarity guide you to greater success and fulfillment.
