You sit down to record an idea and discover you haven’t worked out nearly as much as you thought. A few takes later, you’re changing the part. Hearing it played back gives you something the idea in your head couldn’t.
We bring our experience to a project, but the project has a way of exposing the limits of what we know. Solving one problem can reveal another possibility. Occasionally, a mistake gives the work a direction we would never have planned.
The Philosopher’s Stone of Art approaches this experience through the old alchemical pursuit of transformation. The legend provides a way to consider what happens between the first impulse and the finished piece. It also raises a question about the person doing the making. How much do we change through the demands of our own work?
This new Mack-n-Cheeze Music video explores that relationship. Anyone who has returned to a stubborn project may recognize something of their own experience.
