“Meow, meow, meow.”

I pause at the front door, knowing Otis wants in. But that meow! That means he’s got something. It’s like a victory roar.
The last time I heard it and let him in he promptly dropped a half eaten muffin on the living room floor, as if I did not know how to feed myself.
Cautiously, I open the door. Otis saunters in, tail high, with a mouse in his mouth.
He looks up at me and then gently puts the mouse down on the carpet.
“Otis! That’s vermin. You are supposed to kill it. “
The mouse doesn’t move, quietly looking about the room, no sense of panic at all.
“Why am I supposed to kill it?”
“It’s your job,” I retort, “I rely on your killer instincts.”
“Killer instincts? How long have you known me? You humans and your expectations,” dismissively tossing his head. “Is it easy for you to make friends? You humans, with presuppositions and expectations. Isn’t an act of kindness prerequisite to friendship? And isn’t friendship the beginnings of the truest artistic collaboration? Compassion. Cooperation. Coexistence. The ultimate art form.”

“Can friendship itself be the highest form of creativity?”
