The drum sat in the corner of my uncle’s attic, a relic no one had touched in decades. The chrome was dulled, as if the smoke of uncounted cigarettes had left a pall of brown on the shell. Fingerprints were long since fossilized into its surface. Dust clung to every seam, as if the air itself had given up on it.

I knew what I had: an original Supraphonic, circa 1963. My pulse quickened.

I set it on a stand, cloth in hand, and began to polish. Slow circles. The rag turning black with years of neglect. Bit by bit, a glimmer fought its way through. Underneath the tarnish, the metal still held light.

Then it happened.

From the Ludwig Badge, a thin thread of smoke unwound itself, curling into the air like incense. It thickened, spread, until it formed the outline of a Feline, eyes glowing, body shifting like mist. It stretched as though waking from a centuries-long nap.

“I am the Genie of the snare drum,” the spirit-beast breathed. “You have released me from the purgatory of rim shots. Your reward is three wishes.”

I stared at the old drum, then at the creature hovering in front of me. My throat went dry.

“Alright. First, I wish for success.”

The Genie blinked slowly. “Granted. But success you have already. Did you not know? Think of all you have accomplished. Waste not your wishes. You have but two remaining.”

Thinking hard, I blurted, “Then I wish for endless inspiration.”

Its tail swished. “Heard you not my words? Writer’s block does not exist, and the universe is at your fingertips. But one wish remains.”

I hesitated, then spoke the last. “I wish for more time.”

The apparitions’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Time cannot be given. It only slips away. You need not more, but courage to use that which you already possess.”

Then the Geni stretched languidly, “You have summoned me from chrome and shadow. Now, produce a cushion worthy of my slumber.”
