I’m listening to a mix, headphones on, when I see a creature stalking prey on the left side of the studio.

I look down at Otis.
“Otis, what are you doing?”
“I’m a lion. King of beasts.”
“You’re stalking a microphone cable.”
“You see a cable. I see a snake.”
“It’s still a cable.”
“For now.” Crouching low. “Humans have been connecting snakes with creation for thousands of years.”
Shifting his weight backward, “The Feathered Serpent helped create the world in Mesoamerica and became a patron of arts and crafts. In Aboriginal traditions, Rainbow Serpents shaped the land and carved out rivers.”
“That’s still a microphone cable.”
He shifts his gaze towards me.
“And this was once an empty room. You saw it as a studio before it ever was one.”
He rises from the crouch, sits beside the microphone stand, and begins washing a paw.
“And that song you’re mixing. How many times have you played it?”
“It still isn’t right.”
“Then we’re both stalking something no one else can see.”
