Otis and I were stretched out on the deck while the afternoon sun did its best to convince us summer wasn’t over. The squirrels hurried through the fallen leaves with acorns jammed in their mouths.
Dig. Bury. Cover. Run away. Return. Sniff around. Bury. Bound away again.
Otis licked his paw. “Humans call this poor planning. Squirrels call it creating options.”
“Options? Looks like a lot of work to me.”
Flicking his tail, “How many of your artist friends are waiting for an opportunity to arrive wearing a name tag, a promotion, a record deal, a publisher, or that lucky break?”
“You just described half my contact list.”
“You humans spend a lot of time staring at what you don’t have. A bigger studio. Better gear. More money. More time.”
He sat up and stretched.
“We cats don’t wait around hoping. We go looking. If a door cracks open, we walk through it. If a box appears, we climb inside. If you head for the kitchen, we assume you’ve finally made a good decision. That’s how we find opportunity.”
