The Story
Wenatchee, Washington, was alive with its own rhythm, a town pulsing with the everyday, not swayed by the special occasion that had brought me there. I was in town for a friend’s wedding, a drummer with time to spare before the celebrations. Driven by a spur-of-the-moment decision, I wandered into a local music store the day before the wedding. This place was a sanctuary of sound, its walls echoing with the potential of unplayed melodies and untold stories. Amidst rows of guitars and shelves brimming with vinyl records, I placed my card on a corkboard, a tiny beacon amidst a sea of musicians’ aspirations. In this casual act, unbeknownst to me, lay the first note of an unexpected adventure.
Two months passed, the memories of Wenatchee fading like the final notes of a song, when unexpectedly, my phone rang. On the other end was Darnell Scott, a voice imbued with a sense of urgency. He had found my card in that little store and was in dire need of a drummer for an upcoming gig. It was one of those moments where chance and fate seemed to dance together; a shot in the dark, he said. Intrigued, I asked for the setlist and agreed to join. The gig spanned two nights, an opportunity too enticing to pass up.
Our first night was at a small club, the kind of place where dreams are often born but seldom realized. The audience was sparse, a handful of silhouettes against the dim light. It felt more like a rehearsal than a performance, a chance to blend our rhythms and find our collective voice. But it was the next day, on Darnell’s front porch, where the magic truly began to weave its spell. Him with his acoustic guitar, me with nothing but a snare, a hi-hat, and brushes, we spent hours lost in the music, our laughter mingling with the chords and beats in the warm afternoon air.
The Glue
As the evening approached, we took to the stage for our outdoor show. The first set was decent, a gentle testing of the waters. But as dusk painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, and the crowd swelled in number, something remarkable happened. A symbiosis, a beautiful, intangible connection formed between us and the audience. Each cheer from the crowd fuelled our energy, pushing us to new heights. The bass player, caught up in the moment, played a solo with the bass slung over his shoulders, and I, feeling bold and inspired, embarked on a daring drum solo during Hendrix’s “Little Wing.“
The night crescendoed into an unforgettable climax, with the crowd in the palm of our hands, and in my fervor, I broke my cherished Premier snare drum. But in that moment, it didn’t matter. The broken drum symbolized something greater—a birth of a new bond, a new chapter.
Since that night, Darnell and I have been inseparable as friends and collaborators. That chance encounter in Wenatchee, a card left on a corkboard, had led to a partnership forged in rhythm and harmony. We hadn’t just played music; we had created memories, built a friendship, and embarked on a journey that, like the best rhythms, was unexpected and thrilling. And so, our story continues, one beat at a time.
