Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow

Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow - Mack-n-Cheeze Music Blog #299 with an illustration of a person freeing their creativity, symbolized by music and ideas flying out of their mind.

Is it time to free your mind? Is your creativity echoing in a deep reverb tank, whispering but distant? You’re not alone. If you are healthy, and I assume you are, most of the vacuousness is in your head.

If that creative spark is stuck in traffic, idle, and in neutral, here’s the good news: There is an off-ramp. It’s about three little words: Free Your Mind.

Estimated reading time: 18 minutes

“You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief.”

Free Your Mind. Before you roll your eyes and picture some guru sitting cross-legged on a mountain, let’s get real.

It’s not just a philosophy, but rather, a powerful tool. It’s an attitude that draws inspiration from diverse sources, from funk music to religion to cutting-edge innovation.

Think of it as the key that unlocks the rusty door in your mind. Let the fresh air rush in and clear out the cobwebs. Do you want your creativity to flow?

The ideas here are straightforward and practical.

So, get ready because once you free your mind, you’ll find your creativity soaring to unexpected heights. And believe me, your “ass” will gladly follow along.

“Free your mind” isn’t just a phrase you hear in a yoga class when you’re stretching beyond your limits. This concept has been around for centuries. It’s a philosophy that stretches back from ancient philosophers to modern-day innovators. Fear not. We’re not here to talk about chanting, hugging crystals, or listening to healing frequencies.

The idea of freeing your mind has popped up in some pretty interesting places.

Take ancient Greece, for example. Socrates, known for his love of asking thought-provoking questions, was a proponent of mental freedom, a concept that transcends time and culture. He believed in challenging accepted truths and thinking in new ways, a philosophy that resonates with the modern ‘question everything’ mindset.

Then there’s the whole religious angle. We’re not going down the road of incense and chanting. Hinduism talks about breaking free from the mental clutter. Getting rid of the junk is the state of ultimate freedom. Taoism tells us to chill out. It’s easier to “go with the flow if we stop forcing things.”

The Judeo/Christian world view tells us to renew our minds. As a person thinks, so they are. That’s an awesome outlook.

Stoicism is a favorite of modern self-help gurus. These guys were big proponents of freeing your mind. The Stoics believed that you could achieve a superpower by mastering your thoughts. Unshakeable calm in the tumult of life sounds good. Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius lived it, which is why their ideas still resonate today. Side note: I love Ryan Holiday

Fast-forward a couple of thousand years to the 1960s and 1970s, and you’ll see “Free Your Mind” getting a makeover. It became the anthem of countercultural movements.

For us, the thing is to break free from the Man, reject the status quo, and let our creativity run wild.

If you want to unlock your true potential, it all starts with freeing your mind.

You don’t need to meditate on a mountaintop to free your mind. The beauty of this principle lies in its adaptability. Take a step back, clear your mind, and see where your newfound mental freedom takes you. It’s a journey of self-discovery and creativity that’s open to everyone.

Funkadelic’s second studio album, released in 1970, pushes the boundaries of funk, rock, and psychedelic music. More than only a collection of songs, it’s a sonic experience that invites listeners to explore new mental and musical territories.

The album opens with the title track, a ten-minute mix of distorted guitars, bass, and surreal effects. The raw, unpolished production emphasizes the album’s rebellious spirit. Other standout tracks include “Funky Dollar Bill” and “Eulogy and Light.” Both songs mix social commentary with bold experimentation. The music crosses genres and delivers a powerful mental and social liberation message.

The album focuses on liberation, mental, social, and artistic themes. It reflects the 1970s cultural shift toward questioning authority and rejecting mainstream values. At its heart, the message is simple: freedom begins in the mind.

The album was a game-changer, helping to define the P-Funk sound. Its influence remains strong today, resonating with new generations.

Free Your Mind… and Your Ass Will Follow is a bold and innovative work. To this day, it continues to challenge and inspire listeners to break free from mental constraints. It’s a musical journey that proves anything is possible when you free yourself.

A blank canvas stares back at you. Maybe your guitar lies untouched, or that half-finished poem just sits there. The ideas are in your head, but something holds them back. It’s not the tools or the time. You hold on to self-doubt, fear of failure, or that inner voice whispering, “Not good enough.” These are the actual blocks.

Imagine stepping into the world of Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow. The title alone dares you to drop those mental chains. Do you think George Clinton was concerned about perfection? The track was raw. He wasn’t worried about flawlessness. He trusted that letting go of rigid thinking would lead somewhere powerful. It was the act of pushing beyond doubt. When the band embraced the unknown, the creativity flowed.

What happens when you free your mind? When the fear of failure fades, creativity finds its rhythm in that moment of release. Ideas emerge, unplanned and authentic. Like the intro track to the album with its ten-minute groove. Funkadelic produced a track where the music seemed to write itself.

But freeing your mind isn’t only about casting off doubt. It’s about stepping into the unfamiliar. I have heard modern country cuts layered with EDM. What do you call that? That’s stepping out of the box, for sure. It might seem strange, but it works. Why? That’s artistry embracing the unconventional. Why? Because the producers pushed boundaries most people wouldn’t even think of crossing.

How about Buddy Holly playing the Apollo in 1957?

When the mind is free, so is the art.

What seems unusual becomes groundbreaking. When you stop worrying about how something should sound or look, you open the door to innovation. It’s no longer about thinking outside the box. It’s about realizing the box never existed in the first place.

To free our minds, we must first clear the debris. Fear of failure, distractions, toxic people, these are anchors that keep us from moving forward. Societal pressures and traditional expectations are the chains that bind us. Mental constraints are the walls that box us in.

We need to break free. We need to know where we’re going. Clearly, it’s simple. Clear the path, find your direction, and move. Let go of the noise, the clutter, and the doubts. Free your mind, and the rest will follow. Unshackle your psyche. Once you do that, the journey becomes clear. Embrace your purpose; you’ll know what to do. Start moving. The rest will take care of itself.

You’re walking through a gallery when you find a painting that challenges every notion you have about color and form. Or sitting at a concert, as an unexpected fusion of classical strings and electronic beats leaves you rethinking what music can be. These moments of surprise come from one thing: a shift in perspective.

That’s the alchemy of shifting paradigms. You begin to see a different world when you allow your mind to break away from traditional thinking. Now, the usual rules don’t apply. Art becomes a force that challenges norms, provokes thought, and pushes boundaries.

And it’s not just about shaking up one medium; it’s about seeing connections where others see separations. Think about it. What happens when a filmmaker borrows the language of sculpture? Or if a poet draws inspiration from scientific theories? A free mind doesn’t see barriers between disciplines; it sees opportunity.

What happens when you break down those walls between unrelated ideas? Can your work become richer, more complex, and layered with meaning? This looks like creativity that has taken off. That looks like something fresh. The insights linger long after the experience.

Then there is Jackson Pollock. He was a pioneer who looked at the art world and said, “I’m going to do it my way.” You know him as the painter who flung paint onto canvases in a way that made people scratch their heads. The question became, “Is this art? Really?” Well, the answer was a big, bold “yes.”

Drip Painting Technique

Pollock was a catalyst of using something other than using a brush. He took his canvases, threw them on the ground, and started dripping paint. Pouring and flinging paint onto them. Forget standing at an easel like every other painter in history. Pollock danced around his canvas, controlling how the paint hit the surface.

Action Painting

And that’s where “action painting” came into play. His moves became as important as the paint on the canvas. It wasn’t about creating a perfect picture but about the energy, motion, and process itself. The act of painting was the art. Revolutionary? Yes.

No More Landscapes or Bowls of Fruit

Pollock didn’t care to paint anything recognizable. No apples on tables, no scenic countryside views. He ditched representation and went full on abstract. His works weren’t anything other than raw emotion, pure energy splashed across the canvas. It was up to the viewer to find meaning-if there was any at all.

Bigger is better

Pollock went big. His canvases were massive, bigger than anything you’d see hanging in your typical gallery. He wanted you to feel his art, to stand so close that you could almost hear the brushstrokes. It was an experience.

All-Over Composition

Pollock also threw out the rulebook when focusing on a central subject. He decided the whole canvas mattered. Every inch was part of the chaos, part of the flow. There were no focal points; creativity spread across the entire surface. This idea left its mark on artists for years to come.

Pollock wasn’t always this daring. Before he turned the art world upside down, he was classically trained. He studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York. Benton was all about structure and form. Pollock learned the rules before deciding to break them. He was also influenced by the Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera. Rivera worked on huge canvases that inspired Pollock’s own large-scale creations.

Pollock’s early training gave him technical brilliance. He realized that wasn’t the road he wanted to travel. He desired freedom from rules, from form, from anything that could box in his creative energy. And that’s exactly what Pollock gave us.

Jackson Pollock’s journey shows that sometimes, you must learn the rules before breaking them. He rejected tradition and redefined what art could be. And that, my fellow artist, is why his work still resonates today.

Technological breakthroughs are handing creatives the keys to a world with no limits. Now more than ever, artists, musicians, and writers are breaking out of traditional boxes.

New ways of exploring our ideas, once the stuff of dreams, are available. Let’s shed light on a handful of tools that unlock our creativity and drive our art into uncharted territories.

Imagine creating without ever touching a paintbrush or canvas.

Programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate allow artists to experiment. With a few clicks, they can play with colors, textures, and styles. Gone are the inconveniences of wasting paint or making irreversible mistakes. Want to try something wild? These tools are the playground for limitless creative expression.

Gone are the days of needing expensive studio time to record an album. With Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live and Pro Tools, musicians have a full studio at their fingertips.

This is my realm. Free from the burden of expensive, delicate tape machines, digital enhances freedom. I can layer tracks, experiment with new genres, and create professional-quality music. Whether at home or in mobile situations, the possibilities are limitless.

VR and AR are turning art into experiences; this is not in my pay grade.

Imagine stepping into a virtual gallery where the art surrounds you.

How about walking down a street and watching the murals come alive. The power of your smartphone as your curator.

Artists are using these technologies to create immersive 3D environments. The lines between reality and creativity are now blurred, and the art world has become a whole lot bigger. Whether this is your cup of tea, you need to decide.

Sculptors and designers, this one’s for you. 3D printing lets you bring your digital designs to life in a way that’s never been possible. The artist can now create detailed, hands-on art pieces directly from their computer. Whether it is complex designs or working on quick prototypes, it’s all possible with a few clicks.

The creator imagines it, and the printer builds it.

AI is now the creative assistant you never knew you needed. Tools like Runway and DALL·E let artists collaborate with algorithms to generate art that feels like it’s from another dimension. Musicians can use AI to dream up new melodies, while writers get an extra push when they hit that dreaded block. It’s like having a brainstorming buddy who never gets tired.

Forget geographical limits. Cloud platforms like Google Drive and collaborative tools like Figma let us design and develop new concepts. Artists, musicians, and designers can work together in real-time. They don’t even have to be in the same country or time zone. A door has opened for cross-disciplinary partnerships. Different forms of art merge into something entirely new.

If Instagram and TikTok have taught us anything, it’s that creative trends can explode in a matter of hours. For artists, these platforms aren’t only about showing off their work. Social media has become a place to experiment and get instant feedback from a global audience.

Digital platforms have become the ultimate launchpad for fresh ideas and viral innovations if we choose to use them.

Again, out of my pay grade. 4K cameras, drones, and editing software like Premiere make creating high-quality work easier. Filmmakers and photographers no longer need expensive equipment. These tools allow more people to produce professional-level content.

Now, you can shoot video and edit professional-quality films without needing Hollywood-level resources. You can capture cinematic landscapes or wild experimental shots. The power to tell your visual story is in your hands.

The rise of NFTs has given digital artists a whole new way to make money from their work. Many are selling unique, verified digital pieces on blockchain platforms. Artists now have another way to control their creations. No more wondering how to monetize that digital masterpiece—NFTs are changing the game.

Musicians can now access a symphony’s worth of sounds from their laptops. Virtual instruments and MIDI controllers allow us to create genre-blending music without touching a single physical instrument. Synths, drum machines, and samplers are all within reach, giving you the power to compose without limits.

Grammarly and Scrivener are making writing easier. Speech-to-text tools allow writers to talk through their ideas and see them take shape on the screen. This frees them from the keyboard and allows a natural flow of creativity. Editing is now less about slogging through drafts and more about fine-tuning great ideas.

These tech tools are freeing minds, challenging traditional thinking, and helping creatives achieve new heights in their work.

The future of art, music, writing, and design is more innovative, collaborative, and boundary-breaking than ever. It’s all because technology turns “what if?” into “what’s next?”

Freeing your mind isn’t some mystical, guru-on-a-mountain kind of thing. It’s actually pretty simple. Creativity starts flowing once you let go of the mental junk that holds you back. Here’s the real deal:

Break the Chains: Most of the stuff holding you back? It’s all in your head. Dump the fear, ignore the doubt. Now, your mind can wander wherever it pleases.

Embrace the Impulsive: The best ideas usually sound totally nuts at first. Let your mind explore those weird corners. You might stumble onto something brilliant.

Forget the Rules: Following the crowd is boring. Creativity happens when you throw out the rulebook, embrace your quirks, and do things your way. Who needs conformity?

Make Moves: Once your brain’s free, the rest will follow. You’ll be doing things you never thought possible-because now, you can.

In a nutshell, free your mind, let go of the nonsense, and watch everything else fall into place. Even Ralph Waldo Emerson would agree. Human nature doesn’t change, but how we use our creative essence can.

We find ourselves on the sidelines, gazing straight ahead, feeling the weight of the world bearing down. Clinging to our familiar routines, we tread the same well-worn paths laid long before we get there. We move cautiously, mindful not to disrupt the equilibrium or stray too far from the safety of the known. Though it may seem confining, this familiarity provides a sense of security and understanding in our lives.

When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, our eyes betray us with tiny flickers of fear, uncertainty, and dread. We often avoid truly seeing each other, fearing the truths that may lie beneath the surface. Our greatest fear is that we will expose our inner selves.

We navigate our days like shadows, debating change, prosperity, and death but rarely preparing for them. It’s time to change this. Let’s take control of our lives and be ready for what’s to come.

At night, we lie awake, chasing dreams too big for our grasp. In the morning, the weight of our desires crushes us. We lean on everything around us, hoping those things will carry what we can’t.

Our homes are tidy and comfortable, and everything is in place. But we live lives chosen for us. The work we do, the vows we take, and the idols we pray to are all set up like furniture in a showroom.

We dress like we’re ready for battle but are far from it. Aren’t we hiding in our devices from the real struggle and the fight, away from where we can forge new strength?

In the real world, that’s where the war rages. Sitting back is more comfortable, hoping strength will come to us without ever having to earn it.

Even in the 1840s, people lived with the same chains that bind us today. Isn’t it time we let go? Isn’t it time, especially today, to free our minds?

That’s the point. We need to earn it.
